Our client, a consulting firm specialized in materials engineering (site and laboratory tests, pavement design, expertise on materials and project management), geotechnology (drilling, exploration trenches, slope stabilization and expertise on soils) and in the environment (soil characterization and management of contaminated materials), is currently looking for a Senior Director – Materials Engineering.

Nature of position

Under the direction of the Vice President, the Senior Director of Materials Engineering is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling the activities and resources of the department. The person must do so in compliance with applicable policies, standards and procedures while respecting the objectives agreed upon with the supervisor. You will ensure the quality of services rendered, the respect of deadlines, the profitability of projects and supervises the managers while maintaining high standards of customer satisfaction. As such, you will :

  • Supervise, mentor and manage a team of branch managers by providing them with the necessary tools for their work and guiding their skills development ;
  • Participate in the talent hunt for the positions under your responsibility and transfer the applications to the Human Resources team for analysis ;
  • Evaluate annually the personnel of his department (managers), set objectives and ensure the follow-up ;
  • Ensure the quality control (audit) of the work of the directors and accompany them, if necessary, in their daily tasks and/or technical needs ;
  • Carry out bi-weekly operations follow-up meetings with the managers under their responsibility and monitor the profitability/efficiency of the branches ;
  • Identify the technical training needs of the staff and the department in collaboration with the Human Resources Department ;
  • Identify, in collaboration with the Technical Director, employees with potential for advancement to the role of Assistant Project Manager ;
  • Implement career progression plans for CPI engineers ;
  • Establish an audit structure for engineers and delegate responsibility for follow-ups to the Director ;
  • Coordinate, with the directors, the implementation of an internal training structure for project managers ;
  • Ensure the development of the skills of the managers under his responsibility, in line with the company's strategic objectives, through coaching and mentoring ;
  • Collaborate with the Technical Director to optimize resource deployment ;
  • Coordinate strategic mandate planning with the Technical Director and the Human Resources Director to optimize workforce needs ;
  • Communicate the organization's goals, issues and challenges ;
  • Hold team meetings at fixed intervals to communicate and improve best practices in the department ;
  • Mobilize, motivate and be an exemplary leader within your team ;
  • Be responsible for the success of the mandates entrusted to them, from the planning stage to billing ;
  • Manage the relationship with the department's clients and follow up on the satisfaction of their needs ;
  • Act as a senior professional in various projects and attend meetings with clients and various internal teams ;
  • Alleviate (if necessary) the work of the project managers by taking charge of certain projects ;

Required qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or other relevant training ;
  • Member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec ;
  • Knowledge of MTMDET and municipal standards ;
  • Minimum of 10 years experience as a project manager in materials monitoring and control ;
  • Mastery of the Microsoft Office suite, Slide, Slope, CHAUSSÉE© 2 (an asset) ;
  • Possess a valid class 5 driver's license (occasional trips to construction sites) ;
  • Possess an ASP construction card ;
  • Experience in team management ;
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills ;
