Our client is a research institute that is well established in Canada. They aim to optimize the value chain of the forestry sector by offering a unique partnership between the industry and the government, with the goal of strengthening the Canadian forestry sector's competitiveness globally. They are currently looking for a Research Manager, Secondary Processing - Wood Products for their program aimed at providing product development and manufacturing improvements for manufacturers using secondary processing of wood products.

Nature of position

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Forestry Operations and Wood Products, your job will be to supervise, direct, and oversee the institute's research program for secondary processing, to lead a national research team that understands the issues the industry faces as well as its needs and possibilities, and develops appropriate work products that offer value to its members and clients, in addition to developing, with the existing team, annual research plans, making sure that program plans and objectives are carried out in an efficient way, within established schedules and budgets, and meeting the high quality standards expected by members and clients.

  • Demonstrate the organization's values;
  • Ensure that a succession plan is in place for key positions in the department;
  • Demonstrate fair and equitable treatment of staff; offer opportunities for coaching and development through regular feedback and ensure that performance evaluations are completed;
  • Contribute to the organization's business development efforts as a member of the team of professionals;
  • Obtain revenue for the department and the organization by finding new contract opportunities with institute members, government partners, and business partners;
  • Meet the department's mandate in a fiscally responsible manner, including the preparation and management of the department's budget and the delivery of high quality, timely, and on-budget work products meeting the expectations of members and clients;
  • Work closely with industry members, the Secondary Processing Program advisory committee, research heads, department heads and staff, and in consultation with the vice president, oversee the development and implementation of annual work plans;
  • Implement the institute's small and medium-sized business strategy;
  • Work closely with secondary processing manufacturers, industry associations, suppliers, and government partners to develop programs that will support and enable small and medium-sized businesses to develop in the sector, to create jobs and economic advantages for Canada;
  • Contribute to the long-term success of the organization by understanding the needs of manufacturers using secondary processing of wood products, by staying on top of trends and opportunities, and by having a clear vision for the way the secondary processing program can contribute to improving the competitiveness and profitability of the value-added forestry product sector;
  • Plan, organize, direct, control, and evaluate the full range of activities and operations of your department;

Required qualification

  • PhD or Master's degree in wood science, in engineering, or in a related field, as well as 15 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of schooling and experience;
  • Well-acquainted with value-added products and manufacturing processes;
  • Experience developing annual strategies and action plans;
  • Able to successfully manage a research program and deliver results;
  • Proven leadership ability;
  • Excellent project management and personnel management skills;
  • Able to solve problems, negotiate, and direct a group of people towards a common goal;
  • Able to motivate and inspire staff;
  • Able to work efficiently with a wide range of people and to provide leadership so as to meet the company's goals, as well as those of the team;
  • Bilingual (spoken and written French and English);
  • Available to take frequent trips of several days at a time outside the province (± 30-50% of the time).
