Location : 150 Parkdale, Statistique Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0T6.

Hours of work: 35 hours.

EXPERIENCE: Must be an experience cook, preferably in a daycare setting, posses knowledge of basic principles of good nutrition, have demonstrated abilities in planning, preparing an serving balances meals and snacks.

PERSONAL SUITABILITY: Good personal cleanliness habits.

LANGUAGE: Fully bilingual in both official languages.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to the following:

MEAL PLANNING & PREPARATION:

  • Plans menus on a minimum six-week schedule and to post menus each week where parents can easily see them
  • Indicates and posts all menu changes
  • Reviews the menus with the director on a weekly basis and coordinates the menu with the other activities of the centre.
  • Prepares and serves hot meal at lunch and morning/afternoon snacks.
  • Ensures meals and snacks are ready on time.

CHILDREN:

  • To encourage and foster a knowledge of good nutrition.
  • Responsible for setting high standards of nutrition for children.
  • Posts all children’s allergies in the kitchen and eating area.
  • May be asked to help with children if an emergency occurs.

MAINTENANCE:

  • Responsible to observe and understand requirements for hygienic maintenance and housekeeping as per health guidelines for Day Nurseries of the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Health Unit on daily basis.
  • Maintains a clean, attractive kitchen that will satisfy public health standards.
  • Observes kitchen maintenance duties as per established of the daily schedule-Such duties include washing all dishes and cooking utensils, cleaning the floor and emptying the garbage, cleaning the cupboards and appliances when necessary etc. ….

ADMINISTRATION:

  • Makes budget recommendations and maintains an overview of the budgetary allowances for the kitchen.
  • Handles and keeps accurate records of food petty cash funds.
  • Orders or acquires necessary food supplies.

PARENTS & STAFF:

  • Communicate with staff and parents about food requirements for children with special needs, and assumes responsibility for cooking and menu planning for children with special needs in accordance with a physician’s guidelines
  • Obtains a substitute when sick or on holidays
  • Provides assistance to teachers for food and cooking activities they may wish to plan for their group
  • Attends staff, board and general parent-staff meetings and fundraising activities.
  • Performs other related duties as per instructed by Director.
